Purpose
Commissioners serve as the chief administrators for many important county operations and have some quasi-judicial responsibilities. The County Commissioners’ primary duties are found in “RCW 36.32.120-Powers of Legislative Authority”. A partial list includes: levying taxes to operate the county, adopting a balanced budget each calendar year, financial oversight including authorizing payments legally chargeable against the county not otherwise provided for, auditing the accounts of all officers having control of county monies and managing county property and funds.
The County Commissioners are also responsible for adopting, amending and repealing all county ordinances including zoning, traffic, planning and public safety and any other ordinance concerning the general welfare of the county. In addition, the Commissioners appoint members to citizen advisory boards/committees and non-elected department heads.
