Since early October when the vaccine for H1N1 (“Swine Flu”) was first
available, the Whitman County Health Department (WCHD) has been distributing
the vaccine to physician offices and giving the vaccine to individuals. The
Health Department has been following the recommendations of the Centers for
Disease Control by prioritizing the use of H1N1 vaccine while supplies were
limited. The Health Department is pleased to announce that supplies of H1N1 vaccine are now sufficient enough to remove the restrictions regarding who is eligible to receive the vaccine. Therefore, beginning Monday, December 14, H1N1 vaccine will be available to any resident of Whitman County that wishes to receive it. This includes anyone 25 years of age and older, regardless of health status, and everyone 65 years of age or older. H1N1 vaccine will be available at both offices of the Whitman County Health Department, many physician offices and some pharmacies. Call the Flu Hot Line or check the WCHD web site for locations where you can receive the vaccine. Although cases of H1N1 flu seem to be declining in frequency, both nationally and in our area, the upcoming holiday travel period may spark another wave of flu early into the New Year. Anyone wishing to reduce their chance of catching H1N1 influenza should consider being vaccinated. The Health Department especially urges vaccine for those on the following list:
